Comrades,
My name is Doug Hoffman and I am the VFW Post 3160 Commander for the 2017-2018 year. I am honored and excited to have this opportunity to serve as your Commander. I would also like to introduce Post 3160's new Senior Vice Commander and Past Post Commander, Butch Schupska; and Junior Vice Commander, Rob Pedersen. I am lucky to have a seasoned (old) previous post commander as my Senior Vice to help guide me and a fresh new face junior vice with new ideas. The three of us are excited about this year and the improvements we want to make to an already great post. In addition I want to thank each of you that have helped throughout the years to make this post what it is today.
I joined the VFW back in 2003 after becoming eligible. I was a California Member at Large and did not have a home post. While walking around Driver Days in 2010 I noticed a person with a VFW Riders of VA patch on their vest. I asked that person about it and he invited me to the next meeting which happened to be at Post 3160. Being a member of California I had to transfer my membership to a Virginia Post. When transferring my membership I was asked which post and where I lived. I said this post is fine, it doesn't matter to me. As time went on and I became more involved with the Riders and Post 3160 I found it did matter which post I joined. At Post 3160 it felt like home and that the people here were family. I want every one of our members to have that feeling. It makes volunteering and helping feel like more of a joy than a job.
My goal as Commander is simple…..to continue serving our veterans and their needs. To do this we need to continue OUR (all of us in the Post are recruiters) recruiting efforts to bring in our many active duty veterans in the community. We need to continue Buddy Poppy drives to insure we have the funds to help veterans when the needs arise. I want to see us bring back feeding the homeless in our community, not just on Thanksgiving and Christmas but throughout the year. We need to work more with our local active duty service men and women to let them know what we do and why we are here.
I know that along with our great Auxiliary and their President Mary Butts, we will continue to be the best VFW Post in the area. With the increase in nights that the post has been doing dinners and the many events we host, YOUR continued help is needed. Some of the upcoming events we have are Lobsterfest on August 19, Cootie Safari on August 26, Monday Queen of Hearts with a sandwich, dinners every Friday, Thursday shrimp nights, Breakfasts (along with opening to the public on Sundays for breakfast starting in September), our annual Octoberfest Pig Roast, Cornhole every Wednesday, Darts, VA Hospital visits and many more. So come on out and support or help volunteer your time. Please check out our website www.vfw3160norfolk.org with our upcoming events and see what we are doing. You can also send an email to vfwpost3160@gmail.com requesting to be on our distribution email list. We send out lots of important information that way to our members. If you have any questions, concerns or just want to send us a message email or call us at 757-588-7172.
Yours in Comradeship,
Douglas Hoffman
